How to set SD card
as default storage

When you are unable to set SD card as default storage on your tablet or phone, you may try the methods listed below.

When the SD card is inserted in your phone, please go to Settings > Storage > Default Storage Location. If there is no Default Storage Location option or your phone prompts you that the user account has been created, you will be unable to change the default storage location to the SD card. Please follow the steps below to do the troubleshooting.

1. Unlock the SD card
  • HarmonyOS:
Go to Settings, search for and select Encrypt SD card, and tap DECRYPT MEMORY CARD.
  • EMUI 9.X or later and Magic UI 2.X
    or later:

Go to Settings, and search for and select Unlock SD card.
  • EMUI 8.X or earlier:
Go to Settings, and search for and select Clear SD card password.
2. Disable App Twin
  • The SD card cannot be set as the default storage when the App Twin is enabled. Go to Settings and search for App Twin and disable it.
3. Delete sub-user accounts
  • The SD card cannot be set as the default storage when a sub-user account has been created. Go to Settings and delete the sub-user accounts.
4. Delete PrivateSpace
  • If you have set up PrivateSpace on your phone, you need to delete it. Go to Settings, search for PrivateSpace and tap : : or in the upper right corner to delete it.
5. Delete third-party Apps
  • If a third-party App, such as AirWatch, creates a user on your phone, please delete this App. If you can't figure out which App it is, back up your data and reset your phone before trying again.
