When receiving new messages in WhatsApp, no notification is
displayed and the unread messages are seen only after opening the
app.
To solve this issue, please try the troubleshooting steps below.
Update both WhatsApp and your smartphone's operating system to the latest versions.
Check if WhatsApp is running in the background*.
Tap at
the bottom of the screen (if using three-key navigation) or
swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold (if
using gesture navigation) to open the recent tasks screen.
Swipe down on the WhatsApp preview to lock it and
keep it running in the background.
The icon will appear
at the top of the app preview
and WhatsApp can no longer be closed when pressing
.
*This step applies only to devices without the GMS framework pre-installed.
If you have Google Play Store installed on your device,
make sure you have logged in to your Google account
in the Google Play Store.
Please skip this step if Google Play Store is not installed on your
phone.
Make sure that notifications are enabled both on your device and in WhatsApp.
If your phone is running EMUI 10.X or above:
- open the Settings on your smartphone and go to
Notifications. Search for and select
WhatsApp and turn on the
Allow notifications
switch.
Under Notification type you can set the preferred
notification display method, such as
Gentle notifications, Banners or Lock screen notifications.
If you want the notifications to turn on the screen, go to
Settings> Notifications> More notification settings
and turn on the switch for Wake up.
- open WhatsApp, touch
in the upper right
corner and go to Settings> Notifications.
Check if the switches for Conversation tones and
Use high priority notifications are turned on. This
two functions are enabled by default, but activate them if
necessary.
If your phone is running EMUI 9.X or an earlier version:
- open the Settings on your smartphone and go to
Notifications.
Search for and select WhatsApp and turn on the
Allow notifications switch. You can also select the
preferred notification display method, such as
Display in the status bar,
Banners, Lock screen notifications
or Priority display.
If you want the notifications to turn on the screen, go to Settings> Notifications> More notification settings and turn on the switch for Notifications turn on screen.
- open WhatsApp, tap in the upper right corner, go to Settings > Notifications > Popup notification and select Always show popup.
Prevent WhatsApp from being automatically closed or cleared in the
background.
Open Phone Manager/ Optimiser,
tap on the battery icon and select
App launch/ Launch. Search for
WhatsApp, turn off the
Manage automatically switch next to it and enable
Auto-launch, Run in background,
and Secondary launch in the dialog box appearing on
the screen.
Allow your device to remain connected to the network in stand-by
mode.
If your phone is running EMUI 9.X or above, open the
Settings, go to
Battery> More battery settings and enable
Stay connected when device sleeps.
Also, on the Settings screen, search for Build number and touch it several times until the message ”You are now a developer!” is displayed. Return to Settings, search for Mobile data always on and enable this feature.
If your phone is running EMUI 8.X or earlier, open the Settings, search for Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep and set it to Always. Also, on the Settings screen, search for Mobile network, go to More and enable Mobile data always on.
If the issue persists, you can try to disable battery optimisation
for WhatsApp.
For devices running EMUI 9.X and above, open the
Settings and search for and access
Battery optimisation. Tap
and select
All apps, then find WhatsApp and
set this function to Don't allow.
For devices running EMUI 8.X and earlier, open the Settings and search for and access Battery optimisation. Tap and select All apps, then find WhatsApp and set this function to Don't optimise.
If your device is running EMUI 10.X, go to Settings > Apps > AppAssistant > Game Space and disable Uninterrupted gaming.
If you have enabled the face unlock feature, open the Settings, search for Face recognition and disable Show notifications/ Smart lock screen notifications.
You can also try disabling App lock for WhatsApp.
Open the Settings, search for
App lock, and turn off the switch next to WhatsApp.
If none of the above solved the issue, the problem may be caused by
the sleep mechanism of the Android system and the WhatsApp
power-saving feature, which causes delayed messages in the Android
system.
Please rest assured about using your phone, and we will solve this
issue to give you a better messaging experience.
